THE TARAHUMARA STORY
Deep in the heart of Mexico’s Sierra Madre Mountains lies the rugged beauty of the Copper Canyon region of Mexico. Remote and vast, the canyon is home to a forgotten people group called the Tarahumara. Seeking refuge from conquering Spaniards centuries ago, the shy and private Tarahumara remain isolated, void of influence from outside the Canyon.
Seventeen years ago, God told a Mexican pastor named Tomas to help the Tarahumara. Relying on resources provided by his local Alliance church, Pastor Tomas has faithfully visited the Tarahumara people for years, initially bringing essential supplies like food, blankets, and clothing. Today, Tarahumara Ministries is meeting the needs of the Tarahumara caused by extreme poverty and isolation.
THE CONTINUING STORY
When the Alliance Women’s Ministries team visited Copper Canyon in early 2013, they knew they had to do something to help: sexual, physical, and emotional abuse is rampant in this region, and 50% of children die before the age of ten.
Alliance Women’s Ministries set a goal to raise $150,000 to build a health clinic and a women’s shelter. Watch the vibrant video trailer on this page to see how Tarahumara Ministries is bringing the love of Christ to a hurting people. This video is also available full length (10 minutes) in English, French, Cantonese, and Mandarin.
Through biblical teaching, Tarahumara Ministries demonstrates that every person has value and is deeply loved. Building a health clinic and a women’s shelter is a practical way that Tarahumara Ministries will continue to meet the immediate needs caused by extreme poverty, isolation, and social issues; these buildings will provide hope and love for the women who suffer violence and discrimination.
